CASA HELPS CHILDREN NATIONWIDE

Since it's creation in 1977, CASA has had a dramatic impact on the nation's court system.

By the end of 2004, the CASA/GAL Network consisted of 937 CASA program offices including 675 independently governed local programs, 157 state governed local programs and 46 state organizations.

New programs start up at a rate of two per month.  Research shows these programs had 50,801 volunteers donating over 4.5 million hours to making a lifelong difference in the lives of abused and neglected children.

In 2004, approximately 13,363 new volunteers were trained to help meet the need.

Each week, child protective service agencies in the United States collectively receive more than 50,000 referrals alleging that children have been abused or neglected.  As referrals may involve more than one child, the total 2.9 million referrals concerned approximately 5.5 million children.

Violence often occurs against women and children in the same family.  Research indicates that between 50 and 70% of men who assault their female partners also abuse their children.

An estimated 188,620 children were served by CASA/GAL volunteers in 2004, utilizing more than 70,000 volunteers who advocate for the best interests of America's abused and neglected children.  As a result of CASA volunteer's work, these children have a better chance of finding a safe, permanent home and hope for the future.

In Wyoming there are four CASA programs:  CASA of the Bighorns with offices located in Sheridan and Buffalo; CASA for the Sixth Judicial District located in Gillette; and  CASA of Natrona County located in Casper.  CASA of Natrona County was established in 2001.
